So joinery it is then the subject of the blog for today and well it dates back a very long time. Like if Jesus himself’s auld lad Joseph was a joiner then it’s b.c for sure. I mean I’m struggling with the maths here but I think the Japanese were the first to master the trade. No stats no proof I’m just guessing these guys where the first to have the sharpest chisels in the box.

Even now these guys compete to see who can shave the smallest micron shaving of a piece of wood with a hand plane. Check out the 2012 finals

The Japanese have long been renown for amazing steel and amazing joinery skills and today you can still pay thousands for one chisel from japan.

Technolgy in joinery

Today it’s different in the rest of the world theirs a machine for everything. Mass production, unfortunately, killing the skills of yesterday (and the quality). I have to admit though even for the smaller joiner or even a hobbyist theirs some cool stuff on the market today. Just purchase yourself a cnc 3d router and your pretty set .

Its cheating though , lets be honest.Nice work if you can get it pushing buttons on a machine but soon we wont need anyone to push buttons , they will push themselves. Not saying I could forge a magnificent blade , and enter the hand plane Olympics , but not saying I couldn’t just haven’t got much time lately what with all these blogs..

Unfortunately we do not see much work like this being produced anymore which is a shame , but maybe you would like something different customized for your house , something no one else has got , maybe you have a design of your own?

Stairs

We do make stairs and last year we used a stair specialist to knock up pretty basic softwood stairs, not that we could not have made the stairs but not for the price they did because they’re set up specifically for stairs.
